One coat hanger on a ceiling sprinkler in a Düsseldorf hotel. The head snapped, thousands of litres flooded the room, and the damage came to roughly 150.000 Euro. The guest's defence? It looked like a coat hook, and nobody put up a warning sign. The lower court bought it. The Oberlandesgericht Düsseldorf did not: fragile, ceiling-mounted, out of normal reach, so gross negligence. Door knobs and shower rails, yes. Sprinklers, no. No appeal allowed. Takeaway for independents: under this ruling, a sprinkler on the ceiling counts as enough protection without covers or stickers, and the hotel's building insurer sends the bill to the guest, not to you.

Oyo wants your money to pay its debts

Oyo's parent Prism is lining up an IPO for November, and the draft offer document proposes a Rs 6,650 crore fresh issue. Where does the bulk of that money go? Debt repayment. Growth gets whatever is left over. You have to admire the honesty here (most of us refinance quietly at a bank, without asking the public to buy shares in the hole). Meanwhile you're still chasing a no-show deposit and calling it cash flow management. Investors, read the use-of-proceeds page first.

Kempinski's C-suite checked out early

Kempinski's Group CEO Barbara Muckermann has left after nearly two and a half years, and she brought company: the CFO, the CHRO, the Chief Development Officer and the Chief Brand Officer are gone too, while the Chief Commercial Officer has resigned (whether he's actually left is anyone's guess). Reasons? Disputed, naturally. Frank Veenstra only got the CDO title in September 2025. Spare a thought for the independent owners behind most of the 74 hotels and residences in 33 countries. You lose one night auditor on a Friday and it's a crisis. Imagine losing the whole repositioning team at once.

Hilton finally found the Nordics. Scandic drew the map.

Hilton calls it a "significant milestone." Translation: why build a Nordic operation when you can borrow the biggest one? Scandic, with more than 300 hotels operating and under development, will develop new hotels under Hilton brands across Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. First up is a 284-room new-build next to Copenhagen Airport, opening in 2029 and run by Scandic on a franchise. So Hilton supplies the logo, and Scandic gets the airport night shifts, the staffing gaps and the PMS meltdowns. Congratulations to Scandic on paying for the privilege. Loyalty members get "new benefits" too, which are still undescribed.

Your website is talking. AI isn't listening.

A Barcelona study went through 27,360 AI travel answers and found independents are 8x more likely than chains to be invisible to AI. Lovely. And your hotel website (yes, the one you paid an agency for)? Hotel websites supply only 7% of what AI says about properties. So someone else is writing your pitch. While you're chasing a no-show and covering the night audit yourself, the robot concierge is busy recommending the chain down the street. Being independent was supposed to be your charm, not your camouflage.

The World Cup came. The tourists didn't.

International air arrivals to the U.S. fell 6.1% in Q2 to 10.3 million, and that's with the World Cup pulling in 471,000 international air visitors. Overseas arrivals dropped 8.0%. So the biggest party on the planet couldn't plug the hole (congratulations to everyone who priced June like a sure thing). To be fair, Q2 only caught the opening portion of the tournament, so the full hangover shows up in the Q3 data. Meanwhile, if your gateway property depends on overseas guests who stay 17.5 nights and spend $1,938 a trip, one stadium won't fix your pickup.

Paid more, still understaffed. Now what?

70% of US hoteliers raised wages. More than half are still understaffed. Congratulations, you paid more for the same empty housekeeping roster (plus the overtime to cover it). In AHLA's survey of 246 hoteliers, goods and supplies (71%) and labour (65%) top the pain list, and US GOPPAR still sits at roughly 90% of its 2019 level. In Asia-Pacific, staff at one in two hotels keep leaving for better pay, and operators rank salary increases fifth among their retention fixes. Pizza party, anyone? Your RevPAR can climb all year while the profit walks out the door on a Friday.

What happens in Vegas: fewer people, apparently.

Most lodging companies Fitch covers raised their 2026 RevPAR and EBITDA guidance, Carnival already sees the same strong demand for 2027, and older guests with time on their hands keep traveling. Then there's Las Vegas. Airline traffic into the city is down 7% YTD, domestic passengers have dropped for 13 straight months, and operators can't fill rooms with higher-value customers (welcome to the club). The recovery plan? Conventions, sports, and hoping travelers remember that the desert is hot in summer. Fitch expects weak third-quarter results. Meanwhile Wynn's leverage sits temporarily above downgrade sensitivities while it funds Al Marjan. Bold timing.

Nobody Pays Extra for 'Deluxe'. They Pay for Views.

Guests don't care what you named the room. In a 700-person study they put real money on specific features instead: about $82 for a sea view, $65 for late checkout, $64 for breakfast for two and $55 for a king bed over twins. The catch? Bookings only went up when every price tag was visible. Hide the math and guests smell junk fees. So on Monday, retire 'Superior Plus' and price the view, the bed and the 3pm checkout one by one (your PMS will complain, obviously).

Read it, then go and be nice to your night porter (yes, nearly a century on, the back of house still hasn't changed much).

The grace period for paper and plain PDF invoices ends 31 December 2026. In 2027 it only survives if your 2026 turnover stayed at or under 800,000 Euro (congratulations if it did, I guess). Everyone else owes domestic business guests a structured XRechnung or ZUGFeRD file for anything over 250 Euro, cash or card. A QR code doesn't count either. The fun part? You only learn the bill goes on the company at check-out. So capture company name, address and email before the folio closes, and test deposits, cancellations and corrections before your PMS improvises them live.

Thank you, EuGH, for confirming on 5 March 2026 what every Finanzamt was already doing: the room gets 7%, but breakfast, parking, Wi-Fi and wellness get 19%, even inside a package price. That includes the parking spot you never charged for. And yes, restaurant food dropped to 7%, but your "Übernachtung mit Frühstück" still has to be split (logic is optional). The BFH still has to rule on tax neutrality, so this isn't settled yet. In the meantime, do the practical thing: put the extras into one "Servicepauschale" and tax 15% of the package price at the standard rate. The tax office accepts that.

Hotels are complicated, says buyer of 93 hotels

TKO wants Service Properties Trust's entire hotel portfolio for $2 billion in cash: 93 hotels, 21,110 rooms, five flavours of Sonesta plus Hyatt Place, Radisson and Crowne Plaza. Best part of the pitch? TKO says the deal frees SVC from "the operational complexity and capital intensity inherent in hospitality assets." So the buyer's own sales argument is that hotels are a headache (welcome to every Monday you've ever worked). TKO's CEO calls it "transformational," and SVC's board will "carefully review." Meanwhile somebody still has to find a night auditor at all 93 of them.

$2 billion deal, lost over a $100 million wire

The $2 billion sale of the Pierre is dead because nobody showed up with the $100 million deposit. Dorchester Collection and Motasem Khashoggi missed the deadline, then missed the extension. Khashoggi blamed the bank for a slow wire transfer (the luxury version of "the cheque's in the mail"). His parting shot: the residents "have their building, which I'm sure they know the condition of." Ouch, but fair: fraying carpets, spotty staffing. Upside? The staff who would have been let go still have jobs. Downside? The $1 billion renovation just walked out with the buyer.

Pricepoint dares hoteliers to out-price its AI in a game called Rate War, and claims nobody has managed it so far (your revenue manager has been warned).

Four in ten DACH rooms now wear a badge

Almost four in ten hotel rooms in Germany, Austria and Switzerland now belong to a chain: 39.3%, up from 36.6% in one year, according to Horwath HTL. The fun part? Total supply actually shrank, so the chains grew while everyone else quietly left the room. In the big cities they already hold 50 to 60% of capacity. Before independents panic, operator insolvencies prove a logo doesn't pay the bills either. Still, if your distribution plan is an OTA listing and a prayer, the groups with loyalty programs and leaner processes are coming for your guests.

Austria: same guests, less money. Congrats?

Congratulations, Austria: overnight stays are flat on last year, and there's less money to show for them. Hotels expect revenue up 1.2% (nominal, so below inflation) and operating results down 1.3%. Only one in ten passes cost increases on to guests in full, and 22% don't dare at all. Meanwhile guests are cutting back on extras, staying shorter and booking later. 88% call staff costs their biggest burden, yet 69% are still hiring (good luck finding that night auditor). And 40% are cutting investment, so the renovation waits. As ÖHV president Walter Veit points out, the local carpenter loses the job too.

Local Law 18 worked. Mostly.

New York has about 80% fewer short-term rentals than it would have had without Local Law 18, according to an iGMS study. Of 31,198 pre-law listings, 76.5% vanished from Airbnb and 17.4% quietly became 30-night-plus rentals (a lease with extra steps). Manhattan lost 81%. The escape route? For every 100 booked nights lost, commuter counties picked up about 13. So most of that demand did not take the train. Wonder where it sleeps now, hoteliers? As for housing, the study will not claim a single apartment went back to locals.

Is your hotel ready for India yet?

India is now Skyscanner's biggest market by users. Searches are up 22% year over year, while the rest of the planet managed 17%. The real story is where they're going. Three years ago 80% of Indian redirects were domestic. Today it's 52/48, so nearly half are heading abroad. Skyscanner's Neel Ghose sums up the mood: "There's more intent to travel, but people want to spend better." Translation for your revenue manager: a huge pool of guests (Skyscanner is openly chasing the first-timers) who book relatively last-minute and want value for every rupee. Still pricing as if everyone books three months out? Good luck with that.

Guilt-Trip Your Guests Out of Housekeeping. It Works.

Eight Chinese hotels, 12 weeks, a robot concierge. When the robot made guests feel a little guilty about daily cleaning, more of them opted out of housekeeping and reused towels than when it gave the neutral version. The researchers counted this in the hotels' own housekeeping records, not in survey promises. (Your mother knew guilt works. Now it's peer-reviewed.) No robot? Fine. On Monday, rewrite the pre-arrival email and the TV welcome screen. Every room nobody asks you to clean is one less shift to cover when your room attendant quits on a Friday.

A writer moves into a crumbling grand hotel just as a Chinese investor buys it and starts making it more "authentic" for the tourists, which is the overtourism debate as a 560-page novel (congratulations, your heritage property is now a theme park). Read it on the slow nights between the mixed reviews and your next brand-mandated renovation.

Wrong number, great percentage, still losing money?

Owners love to haggle over the incentive management fee percentage. A hotel valuation veteran with 40 years in the game says that's the wrong fight. The profit line the fee is calculated from matters more than the percentage itself. GOP or net income? That's the classic standoff, and the veteran's way out is an owner's priority provision. Read your contract before you celebrate a low rate (a small slice of the wrong line still comes out of your pocket, just more politely). You fight the OTAs for every point of margin, so don't hand it to your operator for free.

Rooms get a pace report. Ballrooms get vibes.

Ask your revenue manager how March is tracking and you get numbers in seconds. Ask events and you get the function diary and some promising proposals. Lovely, given IDeaS puts M&E at 20 to 30 per cent of the average hotel's revenue. Take an 80-delegate conference: $28,000 in space, catering and AV, plus 160 room nights at $210. That's $61,600 nobody sees whole, so revenue pushes back on the rate while events discounts a room for a day meeting. Step one: if your system overwrites history, start a weekly snapshot now (yes, a spreadsheet counts). Advice courtesy of an event software vendor, naturally.

Booking's affiliate is pretending to be your hotel?

Guess who's been playing dress-up as your hotel? Guest Reservations, a third-party site that advertises stays at specific hotels, charges higher prices and extra fees, and gets its rooms from Booking through Priceline Partner Solutions. The FTC is now gearing up to act, with more than $500 million in potential penalties on the table. Over 1,000 Better Business Bureau complaints say guests thought they were booking direct. Even the AAHOA CEO fell for it once. And when it goes wrong, who gets yelled at? Not Booking. Your front desk, apologizing for a reservation you never took.

Expedia sued for the rate parity you hated

Three consumers are suing Expedia in Washington federal court over pretty much everything you've complained about since your first channel manager. Here's what they allege: a "most-favored-nation" clause that banned cheaper rates on your own website, demotion in search if you dared undercut on Booking.com or Agoda, and an "automatic rate match" tool to keep you in line. Result? Millions of consumers paid inflated rates, the plaintiffs say, including guests who booked direct. Funny how it takes guests filing an antitrust suit to say what hoteliers have been muttering at the rate screen for years. (They also list opaque fees and unresponsive customer service. Shocking.)

Turns out hotel rooms aren't airplane seats

Back in September 2022, airline pricing shop Flyr bought Pace Revenue (more than 1,000 hotel clients at the time) and decided it was a hotel revenue player too. Skift called it unexpected. Now Duetto has bought the hotel unit, and nobody will say for how much, which tells you something. Flyr's own product chief says the business will go further "in the hands of a team dedicated entirely to hospitality." Translation: we tried, it's yours. The timing? Two weeks after founder Alex Mans resigned as CEO. Pace hotels, say hello to your new vendor. Again.

Chicago runs a marathon. Housekeeping doesn't.

Hundreds of workers at six Chicago hotels walked out on Friday, two days before the Chicago Marathon. Impeccable timing (somebody at the union owns a calendar). Room attendants, cooks, front desk agents, bartenders: gone. And that's just the warm-up. Contracts expired Aug. 31, and 7,000 workers across 46 hotels voted 85% to authorize a strike. If they all walk, it's the largest hotel strike in Chicago history. A union survey says 32% couldn't cover rent last year. Hilton and Marriott didn't reply to requests for comment. So who's turning rooms for the runners this weekend? Hope the GM brought comfortable shoes.

South Tyrol caps beds. Don't call it a stop.

South Tyrol is capping tourist beds across every type of accommodation, with quotas at provincial and local level. HGV president Klaus Berger (speaking for roughly 4,500 members) insists it's a 'bed ceiling', not a 'bed stop', a distinction only a lobbyist could love. Does it work? 'The next few years must show.' Meanwhile his members are losing margin to energy, financing, food, IT support, marketing and bureaucracy, and staff can't take jobs in places where they can't afford to live. Capping beds is easy. Staffing the ones you already have is the actual job.

Guests start on Booking, then sneak off to you?

For the first time, the OTA beats Google as the starting line. 26% of travelers begin their hotel search on platforms like Booking.com, while 21% start on search engines. Congratulations, your OTA profile is now your shop window, search engine and sales floor all in one (commission included). The twist: 18% of those OTA starters end up booking direct, up 3.3 points on last year. They don't come for a cheaper rate. They want control: flexible cancellation, a guaranteed room category, and someone to talk to directly. So fix those weak photos on the extranet first, then make your own website earn the booking.

Stop Guaranteeing Upgrades. Let Guests Gamble For Them.

Breffni Noone at Penn State tested the three ways hotels sell paid upgrades, and the guaranteed upgrade (pay X, get the suite, done) lost to both alternatives. Guests rated conditional upgrades ('pay less, you get it if it's still open on arrival') and name-your-price bids as more attractive, and said they were more likely to buy. Bids came in across the widest range of amounts, so that's where the money is. Meanwhile your junior suites sit empty, earning zero. Monday: replace the fixed-price pre-arrival upsell with a bid.

Five days in a failing independent New Orleans hotel, with a chain mogul circling to buy it, a cat burglar working the floors, a hit-and-run duchess and an elevator about to give out. It came out in 1965 and still reads like your last Friday shift, except nobody had to fight with Booking about it (Hailey even lived in the Roosevelt for two months to get it right).

Your soft date isn't always a price problem

Pickup is behind, the calendar looks exposed, and someone has already opened the rate screen. Hotel Speak suggests (gasp) first asking what is actually weak. Is the whole market soft, or just you? Is your offer wrong for who's still travelling, like a midweek gap pitched as a leisure weekend? Are you even visible on the channels that matter? Or are guests bailing at a clunky mobile payment step? Cutting the price of an offer nobody sees changes very little. And plugging AI into a misdiagnosed problem just scales the wrong assumption faster. Pricing is a tool, not a confession booth.

A hospitality discount that raises your bill?

England finally gave hotels their own business-rates multiplier: 43p per pound of rateable value below £500,000, and 38.2p under £51,000. How generous! But the same 1 April 2026 revaluation dropped the pandemic-depressed 2021 valuation date for 2024, when you were actually trading again. So your 'lower' rate now multiplies a fatter assessment, and if you cross £500,000 you land in the 50.8p high-value band. Add a temporary 1p supplement to fund transitional support (thank you, truly). Before anyone celebrates, compare what you actually pay after reliefs in both years, not the headline rate.

I read 7,973 headlines this week. That breaks my old record of 7,251, and I would like it engraved somewhere. 1,915 new stories came in and 1,900 were rejected, a 0.78% acceptance rate, which I call taste. I collapsed 236 near-duplicates, yet the Expedia lawsuit and the Chicago strike each still reached layout twice in different hats. I printed each one once and am now acting as if I planned it.

Now the honest part. The fact-check flagged 2 items as unverified, and 3 articles refused to be fetched and got demoted to one-liners. On the bright side, all 45 sources answered and none went dark. On top of that, 2 new sources joined the party. Loot!

What you probably think it is

You probably picture one very clever AI that reads the hospitality trade press and writes you a newsletter.

It is not that. It is four small programs, a file, and a person who taps buttons. The AI is a guest star with eleven lines of dialogue.

Read the picture from the bottom up:

• The human (that is the editor of record, a person) lives in a Telegram group. Each program has its own topic there. Programs post drafts with buttons. The human taps. The program reads the tap as an instruction.

• The file is one SQLite database, leportee.db. The four programs never call each other. They leave status notes in the file and read each other's notes. It is the least dramatic architecture that could work, and it works.

• The four programs are called Scout, Writer, Editor and Herald. Each one is plain Python, with a small slot where Claude gets called.

Most hotels that bought AI still do the work by hand, and only 7% of PMS vendors will even show you their API docs. Golden Week brings longer stays at smaller rates, so your housekeepers get busy and your RevPAR gets humble.

1. Big Players

Who actually prices your rooms? Not you, apparently.

Congratulations, you now have a co-revenue manager you never hired. Through its merchant payment model, Booking.com sets the guest-facing price below the rate you load. That covers an estimated one in five independent room nights sold. So while you spend Monday morning agonizing over a small bump for the weekend, someone else quietly decides what the guest actually sees. Pricing control, effectively outsourced, and nobody asked you. Next time a guest asks why your direct rate is higher than the OTA's, you'll know exactly who to thank.

Booking's parity homework, round two

Remember when the EU made Booking a DMA gatekeeper and banned parity clauses? Apparently that needed a follow-up. After more "regulatory dialogue," Booking will stop checking your direct-website prices for Booking Sponsored Benefit eligibility. The "competitive" and "non-competitive" labels in the Extranet are gone too (the Commission didn't want you feeling expected to align prices, perish the thought). Bonus: reservation-level BSB data and more transparency on Genius, Preferred and Preferred Plus. HOTREC is "taking note," which is lobby-speak for "we'll believe it when we see it." Meanwhile, Article 5(3) says you can price your own website however you like. Go do it.

Cheaper on your own website? Booking finally shrugs.

Thank you, Booking, for working out in September what the DMA has required since 14 November 2024. Sponsored Benefit (the discount Booking pays for itself, with your commission unchanged) no longer checks whether your room is cheaper on your own website or on another OTA. The "competitive" and "non-competitive" labels are gone from the Extranet too. They still scan your outside rates, but only "for informational purposes" (sure). And there's no fine, just "regulatory dialogue." So go ahead: price your direct channel lower, keep the commission you'd have handed over, and see if your ranking actually stays put.

Vrbo found a new way to catch Airbnb

Congratulations to Vrbo on its plan to catch up with Airbnb: charge hosts more. From October 29, everyone moves to a flat 12% fee. Property managers connected through a PMS paid 5% until now, so their fee more than doubles, and AirDNA says 55% of listings globally connect that way. Unconnected hosts jump from 8%. The sweetener? A vacation rental expert says the 11-14% guest fees will be cut drastically, but Vrbo's own FAQ says travelers will still see a service fee in most cases. So guests pay less and you pay a lot more. Rerun your channel math before the 29th.

Your PMS has an API. Good luck finding it.

Only 7% of 343 audited hotel PMS vendors publish fully self-serve API documentation. Seven. Percent. The rest would presumably love to discuss it on a call. Across 18 scored profiles, Mews topped the composite at 80.0 while Oracle OPERA 5 brought up the rear with 26.3 (congratulations on the participation trophy). So the next time a vendor pitches you their "open ecosystem" while your new integration is still stuck in limbo, ask to see the docs. Odds are someone has to check with someone first.

Meta's new AI books hotels. Guess who's merchant.

Meta unveiled Muse, its personal AI assistant, earlier this month, and Expedia moved in before the paint dried. U.S. travelers will describe dates, destination and preferences, get options and book, with Expedia as merchant of record. (Launch date? Nobody knows.) Online travel stocks fell on September 23 over fears Muse would disrupt the aggregators. Relax, says BTIG's Jake Fuller: Muse takes no commission cut, so it's free traffic for OTAs. Free for them, anyway. Fuller also says your hotel-funded discounts are part of why OTAs are so well placed. So who's building the agent that books you direct?

Bought the AI. Still doing it by hand.

The State of Distribution 2026 is out, and the verdict is beautiful: hotels keep buying generative AI, yet only a few have actually cut their manual workload in any real way. Congratulations, you now own a very expensive intern. The blockers? Fragmented data, weak reporting, poor integration. In other words, the AI can't automate what your systems refuse to share with each other. Before you sign the next shiny AI contract, maybe get your PMS and channel manager on speaking terms first.

The robot picks your hotel now. Feed it.

Anthony Capuano says AI will hit hotels hardest in distribution, not operations, so Marriott is feeding Google and OpenAI everything it has. Google started AI Mode hotel booking in the US on August 27, with Marriott, Hilton and IHG launching right next to Booking.com and Expedia. Cozy. The best part, per Lighthouse: 82 percent of the sources these bots rely on are OTAs, metasearch and media, and most hotels never showed up in the answers at all. So the machine deciding whether you exist reads your OTA listing first. Is your property description still just one word, "charming"? Fix it before the chatbot repeats it.

Your guest's bank wants to sell your rooms now

Revolut started in 2015 as a currency exchange with prepaid cards for tourists. Now the London-based digital bank sells hotel stays, experiences, trip insurance, lounge access and points convertible into airline miles. It has conditional approval for a U.S. banking license, so the same playbook is heading to the United States. Congratulations: your guests' banking app is now a distribution channel. Commission terms? Nobody's mentioning those yet, which is exactly when you should start asking. Meanwhile your front desk is still on the phone figuring out how to charge a virtual card.

Barcelona found new ways to tax your guests

A couple staying five nights at a Barcelona five-star now pays €120 in tourist tax alone, up from €75 before April. Thanks, Catalonia. Somewhere a guest is already blaming you for it in a review. The city also tried to raise property tax on its roughly 208 highest-value hotels from 1.17% to 1.30% (it stalled in commission, for now). Cruise day-trippers have it worse: €11 today, €30 by 2030. And that €5 municipal surcharge? It isn't the ceiling. Price your packages accordingly, because the city certainly is.

Longer stays, smaller rates. Happy Golden Week!

Only 5% of Chinese outbound travelers this Golden Week expect to stay in a luxury hotel, and more than half plan to pay under RMB 1,000 (roughly US$149) a night. Meanwhile Trip.com says bookings of seven nights or more jumped 123%. Before you pop the champagne, note the comparison: a 13-day window this year against a seven-day one in 2025, so thank the calendar. Italy, Spain and France still posted triple-digit hotel demand growth. Translation: higher occupancy, compressed per-room revenue. Good news for your housekeeping roster, less good for anyone who aimed their Golden Week marketing at high spenders.

Your Housekeepers All Start at 8. Why, Exactly?

Every room attendant clocks in at 8:00 and waits around for checkouts. Then at 3pm your arrivals queue at the desk asking why 412 isn't ready (and they'll mention it in the review). Cornell's Vincent Slaugh tested this on data from a big city-center hotel. Moving some attendants to later start times, with the same headcount, all but ends guest waiting after posted check-in. Two morning start times is enough. Bonus: a 10am shift is easier to hire for. Monday: pull your checkout times and move two people.

109 ways to use AI. ROI not included.

198 submissions, deduplicated into 109 AI use cases across 39 hotel systems. The AI Hospitality Alliance and HEDNA mapped them all and are giving it away free, which is more than any vendor has ever done for you. My favorite detail: the priority score explicitly does not measure realized ROI (bless their honesty). So you get a ranked list of what to investigate first, and vendors can submit themselves as examples. Guess how long that stays neutral. Meanwhile your PMS still crashes at check-in, but hey, AI is finally "tangible."

Brand wants new sofas? Show them receipts.

Construction and FF&E costs keep climbing, so a PIP can quickly turn into a multimillion-dollar commitment. The good news is that not every line item is sacred. Bradford Allen got deferrals of at least a year at multiple properties by doing the boring stuff: preventive maintenance, quick paint touch-ups, and photos plus repair logs for that perfectly fine desk the brand wants thrown out. Spend where guests actually notice, like mattresses and in-room tech. Keep your staff long enough to learn the brand standards, too. Turns out your best negotiating tool is a paper trail. Who knew?

• The Iran war is keeping Asian guests off the Jungfraubahn, so not even the Alps are high enough to escape geopolitics.

• Heathrow's third runway might not arrive until 2039, so plan that airport hotel expansion for your grandchildren.

Korean Air spends $44.8bn. Your renovation budget weeps.

Korean Air just signed a US$44.8 billion deal with Boeing for 103 aircraft, 21 spare engines and 15 years of maintenance (meanwhile your owner is still arguing about whether the lobby carpet can survive another season). The plan is more capacity through the Asiana integration, 25 more 787-10s with enclosed suites and 198cm lie-flat beds, and 50 737-10s for short-haul routes out of Seoul. So your business guest arrives rested after sleeping fully flat, and then meets your mattress. Good luck with that review. The best part: the 20 777-9s haven't flown for any airline yet. First deliveries? 2027, supposedly.

Trip.com learns what exclusivity clauses actually cost

Congratulations to Trip.com, China's largest OTA, on a $763 million fine after a six-month antitrust investigation. The charges read like a hotelier's diary: illegal pricing practices, traffic allocation and exclusivity restrictions in agreements with hotel suppliers. It's China's first antitrust case against an OTA, and accommodation made up 42% of Trip.com's 2025 revenue, so this one lands exactly where it hurts. China's government even has a word for discount wars that squeeze suppliers: "neijuan" (involution). Next time your listing mysteriously sinks after you refuse another promo, you'll know what to call it.

2. Travel Tech

Thank you, DMA. Very helpful.

Up to 30%. That's how much free direct booking clicks have dropped for European hotels since Google changed its search results because of the DMA, according to Cayuga Hospitality Consultants. Regulate the gatekeepers, they said. Hotels will benefit, they said. Instead, the hotels trying to dodge OTA commission are the ones paying for it. Lovely timing, Brussels. The consolation prize? The Broadmoor made $1M in direct revenue from follow-up calls. Yes, phone calls. Picking up the phone still beats waiting for Google to love you back.

The lock company wants your whole guest journey

dormakaba, the access-control people, just signed a binding agreement to buy Alliants, the guest-tech outfit behind more than 100,000 hotel rooms. Price? Not disclosed (always a reassuring sign). The pitch: room entry plus concierge, contactless check-in, mobile key, payments, messaging and, naturally, agentic AI, all from one supplier with a presence in more than 130 countries. Both promise to stay interoperable with other providers, so hotels keep "real choice." Lovely. Meanwhile your PMS still crashes at check-in, and soon the door lock and the chatbot can blame each other in the same vendor meeting.

Your next guest is a bot on WhatsApp

Meta's new AI agent, Muse, lives in WhatsApp. It plans the trip, opens a browser and keeps working after the guest closes the app. Then it books after one polite request for approval. The guest never visits your website and never even scrolls an OTA. So if your pet policy is hiding in a PDF and your parking fee reads differently on every channel, the agent's safest answer is another hotel. Or worse, an OTA with cleaner data (enjoy that commission). Meta hasn't published a ranking formula yet. Fix your content now, while the robot is still deciding whether it likes you.

Hotels bought AI. Where did the time go?

More than half of hotels now use or are procuring generative AI. Fewer than one in ten say it cut their manual work by more than 30 percent. Congratulations, you bought a very expensive intern. Meanwhile more than 80 percent of commercial teams still burn one to two days a week building reports by hand, and OTAs still bring in close to twice the bookings of your own channels. RateGain's founder said it best: "Buying AI is easy. Getting value from it is not." (Nice of a tech company to admit it.) Fix your reporting before you buy another chatbot.

3. Industry Trends

Direct booking still wins. Barely.

Good news: 51.3% of European hotel nights were still booked direct in 2025. Bad news: that was 57.6% in 2013, and Booking Holdings and Expedia now hold 85.4% of all OTA bookings (Booking.com alone: 66.1%). Healthy competition, clearly. Meanwhile 51% of hotels say OTAs undercut their rates, and four out of five never agreed to it. The cherry on top? Cancellation rates of 19% on Booking.com versus 9.1% direct. So the channel charging you commission also cancels at double the rate. Hotrec wants the Digital Markets Act actually enforced. Your revenue manager just wants a drink.

Your next OTA might be a bank.

Chase Travel booked $13 billion last year, and JPMorgan now calls it the third-largest consumer leisure travel seller in America. Yes, a bank. Capital One is bringing its travel tech in-house, and Amex has been running a travel agency since 1915 (older than your boiler, probably). Meanwhile Citi, Bank of America and Wells Fargo put $1.1 trillion of card spending through their cards in 2025 and still passed on selling rooms. Their bet is that a different part of the traveler is worth more. So now you get two kinds of middleman: the ones selling your rooms, and the ones after some other piece of your guest.

The World Cup was supposed to fix this, right?

Remember when the World Cup was going to save the summer? Cute. The U.S. got close to 3.1 million visitors in August, down 11.8% year over year, and that's after a 7% drop in July. Arrivals fell from every region: Africa down 25.5%, Central America 20.6% and Western Europe 14.8% (so much for the transatlantic cavalry). Congratulations, America, you've turned a whole country into one giant no-show. If your forecast still counts on international demand bouncing back by itself, start courting domestic guests before your revenue manager quits on a Friday.

Airlines panicking over fuel? Not yet, apparently.

Fuel prices are soaring, and most of North America's airlines are... weathering it just fine, because their revenues keep soaring too. Airline Weekly pictures an industry pressure dial turning steadily to the right and asks the obvious question: is something going to break? Their verdict on hitting the panic button: not yet. Lovely. Imagine your costs spiking and your plan being "we'll just earn more." Meanwhile you're still haggling with an OTA over commission. The real question is how long "not yet" lasts before the dial hits red.

4. Hospitality Academia

Paying Google to steal your own free clicks?

Cornell ran 26 hotels through Google Hotel Finder, switching them between free and paid listings every week. Paid ads lifted total clicks 84% and search-tracked bookings about 41%, and 78% of the extra bookings came in direct. The catch: your free organic link lost 70% of its clicks, and people who click ads book less often. So part of what you pay for is traffic you already had. Monday move: run ads on soft dates with few impressions, and kill them the minute you're nearly full. Google won't remind you (funny, that).

5. Tips & Tricks Tools & SaaS

The no-show paid. So did HMRC.

Good news: the guest who never turned up still paid. Bad news: HMRC wants its cut. Under guidance updated on 7 March 2025, UK cancellation fees, no-show charges and retained deposits are all subject to VAT, and calling the charge "compensation" changes nothing (nice try, though). So the £120 you kept from your latest ghost is really £100 for you and £20 for the taxman. If your revenue manager counts non-refundable rates as pure profit, it's time for a chat. Also check that your direct, OTA and corporate terms say the same thing, because when your systems disagree, reconciliation gets ugly fast.

Automate everything? First, fix your old guest guide.

An operator running three small studios has a radical AI strategy: make your property facts boringly consistent first. Revolutionary, I know. But an AI assistant doesn't rank you, it interprets you. So when you update the Airbnb description, change a rule on Booking.com and forget the old guest guide, the machine will confidently present the wrong version. Stale calendars? Same story. And bolting a chatbot onto a confusing direct-booking journey just repeats the confusion faster. Define, simplify, then automate. Keep the bakery recommendations human (the robot has never actually been to that bakery).

6. Externalities

• Nepal is facing a tourism decline after catastrophic floods, and no revenue strategy fixes that.

• Asia gets almost half the world's new aircraft, so now somebody has to find out whether the region's airports (and beds) can handle the boom.

• Some Middle East flights keep getting postponed, in case your Gulf-route bookings looked a little too confident.

• Flight cancellations just hit a four-year high, so expect more guests arriving at 2 a.m. and reviewing you for it.

I read 4,152 headlines this week, ingested 1,195 new stories and rejected 1,178 of them. That is a 1.42% acceptance rate, stricter than any rooftop bar door, and 13 full items survived. I also collapsed 149 near-duplicates, which means 149 press releases thought a new hat would fool me. None of them did.

Now the honest part. The fact-check flagged 2 items as unverified (last week it was 3, so I am improving in public). Four articles refused to be fetched and got demoted to one-liners, and 1 source went dark. Michael killed 3 stories and demanded 0 rewrites, and I am filing that under praise.

Booking Holdings is welding Agoda, Booking.com and Priceline into one B2B backend while Google tests agentic hotel booking, so the middleman is quietly becoming the only man. AI shows up everywhere in the chat and almost nowhere in the actual bookings, yet Radisson, Vrbo and Booking keep pouring money in (the boring ranking AI is the only bit paying rent, and the customer-service headcount is the real casualty). Airbnb found 17% growth by charging hosts a 15.5% fee and switching your cancellation policy for you, Accor grew rooms while profit halved, and London’s luxury glut corrected itself without a single regulator lifting a finger. Meanwhile travel agents grew hotel bookings twice as fast as the OTAs, the World Cup filled wallets more than rooms, and Istanbul finally knocked Heathrow off its perch.

Booking Holdings Builds One B2B Machine

Agoda, Booking.com, and Priceline are quietly welding their separate B2B units into one platform, Booking Partner Services, with Agoda’s CEO Omri Morgenshtern now running the show. Priceline’s partners are already mid-migration, and the whole thing could drag into 2027. A source tells Skift it’s “a big task,” corporate-speak for months of API headaches nobody signed up for. Three brands, one backend: at this rate Booking Holdings just becomes the only booking platform left standing, and everyone else just rents a login.

Airbnb finds growth, hosts foot the bill

Airbnb posted $3.6 billion in revenue, up 17%, and Brian Chesky insists there’s “no silver bullet.” Sure. ETIAS Delayed Because EES Is Still on Fire

EU-Lisa admits ETIAS won’t launch this year after all - the FT says 2027 now, despite the website still promising Q4 2026. Apparently, while tourism grew 2.5% in Spain last year, it grew 135% within the Short-Term-Rental sector. The battle continues. Solutions until than? US only and partially for global regions, but still. What happened in July? ADR down, RevPar down several weeks in the raw. Even globally occupancy decreased. Weekends weren’t as bad, but still decreased. Only segment that saw an increase were luxury chains. “Poor” people seem to not want to travel as much.

Cost Survey by HVS

HVS has also released a cost survey for 2025. While construction cost of hotels has still increased in 2024, the cost inflation has decreased to 3-4%. RevPar and Adr on the other hand have increased 1-2% depending on what metric you look. As a result it “makes more sense” to build hotels again. Hilton surveys 13 thousand lucky travelers

Hilton released a report form June based on 13 thousand surveys. Any learning’s? 78% of people are taking holidays “spontaneously”. 75% feel FoMo when traveling and 68% have an itinerary. Overall the report goes into various target groups, spending patterns and more. Airbnb blames hotels for over tourism

Remember that time Airbnb was blocked or limited by various cities around the world due to it’s impact on rent and over tourism? Apparently its hotel’s fault. According to an Airbnb report, over 80% of stays in EU take place in Hotels. Fair enough. The only thing that report forgot to mention is that these hotels had to get a construction permit, submit statistics, pay taxes where applicable and are in buildings where the zoning permits it, unlike many Airbnbs. Regardless over tourism isn’t the result of Airbnb or hotels, its simply high demand outpacing local supply and corresponding infrastructure. Unfortunately, your city is just too nice for people around the world to miss.

Accor CEO gave an interview. Unusual right? In Summary? Luxury is on the rise more than other segments. Opened 45 hotels in Q1. Argued that middle-class growth, infrastructure and demographics are the main variables impacting the industry. Extended for another 3 years as CEO. Average occupancy for the chain is 67%. 1% lower than 2019 levels. Main strategy points were making the chain asset lighter, by selling properties owned by the group and diversifying the portfolio further in different segments. More here.

A hostel gets 450 million Euro funding

Room00. Have you heard of them? Me neither and yet they are on they way to become the biggest hostel operator in Europe. All the sources about it popped up within the last year. An interesting story to follow over the next years, given they appeared out of nowhere.

Accor gets sued for privacy violations

On a surface, this sounds like generic news, BUT! But, this can likely happen to the majority of hotel operators. In a nutshell a site from Fairmont when visited would send information of the visitor to Meta (alleged). This was not included in the chain’s privacy T&Cs. While this isn’t going to bankrupt Accor, it sure might make a big dent in the bottom line of independent players. Indeed, likely fines can go up to 20 million Euros in EU, or 4% of your annual revenue. So? Check your cookies…

OYO, India’s biggest hotel group is going to offer F&B concepts

Who cares? Well, OYO at its core is management company with asset light strategy. You own a B&B somewhere, OYO comes in, gives you a brand guideline, software and suppliers for your day to day and away you go. Offering F&B would be an additional segment, that would make the model a layer more complicated. Interesting how will that look like in the years to come.

Marriott takes over CitizenM

In case you missed it, Marriott acquired CitizenM. In negotiations for a while, and announced in April. Taking place as we speak. For those who don’t know CitizenM, it was is a unique hotel offering with tiny luxury rooms. Being some of the first to use technology to get people to experience something different outside normal hotel concepts. Biggest chain in the world, buys perhaps the most innovative hotel chain.

Front Desk not needed anymore?

“Oh leave me alone” would a seasoned hotelier say. Reception is important, dealing with people, helping them. Seeing their emotions and supporting them. “Providing Character” to an otherwise empty building, is what makes us special! Well 70% of travelers, according to a mews survey, said they would skip the front desk in favor of self-service. Now, the survey is a little bias, since only 2000 Americans were asked about their preference. This means no 80+ year old grumpy Germans or 76+ year old reluctant French were asked about their opinion of using digital check-in. Which means around 96% of European travelers were unfortunately excluded from this study. But who knows, maybe they can be converted too.

TripAdvisor using AI for trip recommendations

Remember that company who we all loved and participated it? Gaining reviewer badges and praising (or not) fine establishments around the world? Well ever since google decided to grow their own review platform, Tripadvisor has been on a slow decline. Regardless, they are now testing AI and LLMs to create trip recommendations and look for high intent individuals. Unfortunately, everybody else also has access to LLMs, thus lets see if this will make TripAdvisor the returning Hero.

Using AI to respond to reviews?

Here is a little take by TMG on how to respond to guest reviews using AI. In short, it can come up with fake policies that can obviously backfire when you are responding to an angry guest. It will likely mirror what ever it is responding to, meaning just repeat back what ever complaint the guest has (not optimal for SEO). Basically double checking the final responses and giving what ever LLM you are using, notes on how to do better will likely mitigate that.

Record high July 4th?

While a lot of reports show that tourists are less likely to go to US, it does not seem like US really needs foreigners visiting them that much. I know, right? A report from June showed an estimate 72.2 milllion Americans were going to travel during July 4th. A record high number. The vast majority, around 60 million will do so by car. For comparison in 2019 there were around 65,9 million in total traveling.

In the mean time hotel pipeline in the US has growtn 5% YOY. Mostly upscale and midscale hotels. Budget oriented can be probably found in Canada? Europe and other continents are showing growth too. More competition, more fun?

Europeans choose train over anything

Remember Americans choosing car as their preferred form of transport? Well apparently Europeans are switching to train. According to a survey conducted by a rail manufacturer Hitachi. (definitely not bias). There are several references about how train has major stakes in specific travel types (i.e. 2.5 hours or more), yet no absolute comparison. Yet what the article catches well is the sentiment, Europeans want to go green and train is the best way to do so. Two thirds or surveyed Europeans are even pro-banning short-haul flights. I assume these two thirds have never waited on a German DB train for 2-3 hours or had several trains cancelled on them.

Investor sentiment EU

Investors were asked about investing in EU. Specifically into hospitality, by everybody’s favourite CBRE. Result? Fuck yeah! Which cities are the current winners? funny enough London is number 1 (Brexit seems to not have impacted that). Barcelona is still 5. Locals should perhaps burn more buildings down or something. Where to invest into? Luxury and midscale, mostly. Funny enough, according to a latest HVS take on profitability for Midscale and Economy hotels, results were pretty clear. Economy is more profitable.

On the other hand, UK hoteliers were recently warned and urged to be cautious. Inflation, lack of domestic spending and GDP stagnation. But I guess London isn’t UK, right?

Football boosts hotel bookings

Remember Taylor swift concerts bringing record high numbers to hotels worldwide? What about UEFA Champions League? 32% boost was seen in Germany. Whether you want your hotel filled with football fans is another question, but 32% sounds good to me! You know what else caused a huge surge in bookings? Pope Fracis’ Funeral. So if you are chasing those ultimate events, I guess just look at your local obituary’s.

Another start-up is getting 4.5 million dollars in funding. Who cares you might say? This is basically daily news at this point, except this one might be a litte more special. “Purple Elephant Ventures”, is a tech start-up that is focused on the African continent, launching a package of SaaS products for local providers. Indeed an exciting business model, where you can simply take successful ideas from abroad, copy them and adapt to the African market. Ryan air calling for an alcohol limit in airports

Irish are famous for their drinking (at least within some circles ;)), but their main airline isn’t too excited about it. Apparently occurrences of drunks disrupting entire flights have increased, costing Ryan air thousands of euros rerouting the plane. IAT found that 1 out every 480 flights gets disrupted like that. Conclusion? Ryan air wants to limit alcohol consumption in the airports themselves. So drink up, until you can’t anymore.

Beers sales go down, except not for Veltins

With all the talk of alcohol consumption decreasing across the board, there is an interesting exception called Veltins. 1 of top 3 beer producers in Germany. Has not only increased its beer production, but also reached its all time record last year. Why? It is a privately owner company and all the details of their sales are indeed private, nonetheless the owners commented that what has allowed them to grow was creating a more diversified offering of beers. ChatGPT is the future! Right?

With all the hype of AI, there is perhaps one very important topic that one should know before succumbing to general hysteria and implementing into every single item they own, including AI socks. OpenAI is currently loosing money every time you use it (almost every time). Last year OpenAI made 3.7 Billion USD and lost 8.7 billion due to costs. “Compute” costs are not minimal, and the more complex the prompt, the costlier server processing power used. With half a trillion in investments, that might become a little easier, but unless electricty becomes a whole lot cheaper or AI calculations become more effecient, chatgpt might become a luxury for the few.

The Gaza - Israel war over?

Gaza, Israel conflict is finally cooling off. Both are exchanging prisoners and hopefully some form of peace can be formed. In a weird way, today the news were listed in this specific order. First, prisoners exchanged. Second, Trump allows 2.000 pound bombs to be delivered to Israel. Third, Trump is pushing Egypt and Jordan to accept Palestinian refugees. Does that sound like a recipe to long term peace to you?

Global warming, is not having a positive effect on most places this days. Except, the Arctic? WTTC together with VFS Global have partnered together and “revealed” that tourism is going to add another 260$ Billion to the economy of Latina America in the next 10 years. A “very comprehensive” report that I am sure didn’t just look up average GDP growth annually for the continent and multiplied the current GDP volume of the travel sector by that. International flight traffic on the rise

Airlines traffic volume is on the rise. 10.7% to be more specific compared to last year. It is almost like a global pandemic is over, resulting crisis might be subsiding too and now people are flying again? Interestingly enough, different regions are having different upticks. Airport cuts CO2 emissions by 94%

Did you ever sit down and wonder, which airport in Europe won the eco-award? We didn’t either. Nonetheless, the Toulon-Heyeres got it. How? They cut their direct CO2 emissions since 2018 by 94%. Basically at 0 now. There are other prizes categorized by size. Oslo airport is the winner amongst the biggest airports in Europe for its efficiency, autonomous snow removal, baggage delivery etc. Most interesting is that Luton, the 4th least favourite airport amongst passengers in London won the award in its size category. Final topic of this week is Lufthansa getting the final approval from EU to take 42% of a major Italian Airline ITA. This adds to Lufthansa’s already pretty big portfolio of swiss airlines, brussels, Euro Wings and a few more. If you are flying in Europe you will have likely booked with a Lufthansa partner or part owned subsidiary. The EU commission made Lufthansa give up some major routes to competitors in order for them to be allowed to grow their little empire. More here.

Oil, gas and metals. Topics you only hear off in some distant parallel world, which doesn’t influence you or your decisions. On the topic of reports. Another one released by Mews. This time touching on US and guests attitude towards digital check-ins. 80% of respondents wouldn’t mind it. AND, 36% have “admitted” to go to AI models to plan their holidays. That is a pretty hefty number. The report goes into workaction and other topics, in case you are interested.

Tourism industry in Ukraine (Status Quo)

In case you missed it, Ukraine is currently undergoing a war! What trends can be seen as a result?Security is the new luxury, with hotels now featuring shelters, generators, etc. As foreign visitors drop off, hotels are wooing local tourists, business travelers, and internally displaced persons like never before. Seasonality? Gone. Mountain resorts are now bustling year-round thanks to movement restrictions and closed sea coasts. Hotels are doubling as offices, coworking spaces, and even children's camps during power outages. Inclusivity is the name of the game, as hotels upgrade to accommodate a rising number of disabled guests from war injuries. Embracing technology like never before, they're rolling out online registration, mobile keys, and smart home systems, while ensuring uninterrupted service with satellite Internet and generators. Luxury is up, budget is down

Depends on which side you are, the news are either positive or negative. Luxury hotels are slightly up 1.8%. While budget hotels are down 3.4 %. Why? Budget travelers are more affected by inflation and are saving as a result. While richer folk were able to gain from stock price increases and home valuations. Forecast is for that to increase further. More here.

Booking.com is in trouble

Congratulations to booking for becoming a “gatekeeper” according to EU regulators. Almost like a troll on a bridge, EU has decided booking.com is simply unsurpassable. Hence, they might have to start listing hotel’s own rates on their website as a form of giving alternative to travelers? What about other OTAs? Well hard to force the rest since their HQ isn’t in EU. Easy to say, Booking.com CEO isn’t too excited. More here.

On that note, booking is removing “No Refund” rates for its partners, unless you use their payment system. Meaning, even though the guest might have booked 3 months ago and cannot cancel, the money can only be charged from booking virtual cards on the day of arrival. A good way to promote partnership friendly environment. More here.

Expedia going to Europe

Another OTA on the list today. Surprise surprise! Expedia is planning to grow. How? You won’t guess it. AI. Innovative tool building that every other OTA is using too. The question is what makes any OTAs AI different if everybody is starting to offer it? Perhaps the answer is, if you won’t you will miss out. FoMo is a powerful thing. On the agenda is also a loyalty program and centralization. More here.

Lufthansa mandating sustainability fees

Lufthansa is charging a sustainability fee, starting 2025. They did already offer a fair that would offset CO2 emissions (at least partially), but now “due to government regulations” the airline group is going to pass on the costs to all travelers. Next thing you know, Lufthansa employees are wearing “Flew with Lufthansa, Saved the planet” t-shirt. More here.

CO2, no thanks?

Imagine being CO2 free as a property operator? Pipe dream right? Well A&O hostels has managed to cut its emissions by 77%. And is planning to bring it down to 0 next year. To achieve that goal, staff is being trained and perhaps more importantly, A&O properties are getting a 20 million Euro investment to achieve that goal. A nice way to put a spin on a renovation! ChatGPT for review analysis?

A recent paper went into using ChatGPT as a review analysis tool. ChatGPT was compared to older methods that were previously used to go into sentiment analysis and general breaking down of textual content. Guess what, ChatGPT won. So get on their platform now, ask it what you need and get to it. From our personal experience, processing really really high amounts of data is difficult, however if you own a small hotel with a few hundred reviews, this tool is perfect for you!

How can a hotel implement sustainability measures beyond: “Please do NOT DROP THAT TOWEL ON THE FLOOR”? Here is a fine example from a 5 star hotel in Germany. The Brenners Park Hotel & Spa has up cycled their old wallpaper and turned it into notebooks and is planning to do the same with its curtains, by turning them into pillows, vests and more. While probably a more expensive solution than buying new materials (in case you are low on cash) and perhaps not even such a high CO2 offsetting measure (no figures were mentioned in the article), yet still a good gesture? Google Search Claims Another Victim: TripAdvisor Loses Footing

Google's ever-expanding influence in the online search arena has seen TripAdvisor losing its footing as a leading travel advisory platform. If you remember, a while back Google was sued for pushing its own products above competitors, well apparently that was not enough. Google’s 90% grip on the search and its latest adjustments in its own algorithm might have accidentally brought TripAdvisor down. What an unfortunate, probably totally random set of events, that TripAdvisor should have totally foreseen.

Soho House Check-Up Months After Dire Report

Numbers are a bit all over the place. While memberships are growing up 17%, the rest to so much. Debt has increased (currently 664 Million), EBITDA is still in the red. Nonetheless the stock has gone up and investors seem to believe Soho House will get better.

Accor's introduction of HERA, a fresh loyalty and rewards initiative has been announced last week. A rebrand of their old Travel agents program that now unites all its brands and gives “Travel Advisors” an opportunity to collect points of the back of the travelers that they have advised. What can you do with those points? Well book stays yourself of course or shop online. Cash withdrawals were not mentioned.

New Hospitality Survey From Mews Unveils Future Trends

A new survey conducted by Mews has unveiled several emerging trends in the hospitality industry by asking a thousand travelers and a thousand hotel workers about their preferences. These studies have a funny way of presenting data, for example: “Nearly a third of guests stated a perfect hotel would have keyless room entry (34%)”. You could also rephrase that and say that 2/3 of all guests do not need or want a keyless room entry. Otherwise a pretty good list of top ten items is presented. Hotel star rating is being revamped in Europe

Hotel standards across all EU states have been revamped ever so slightly. Focus is sustainability and self-check ins. 8 standards have been removed and now there are 239 of them. You can now have a reception less hotel with digital check-in as a 1-2 start hotel and if you have a check-in Kiosk even a 4 star hotel. Topics like changing of linen is now option or per request of guest with the goal of allowing hotels to be more sustainable. Let see how the guests see it, but exciting to see hotel standards change with time.

Air India Express Cancels Over 80 Flights on Thursday

In an unexpected logistical hiccup? Not quit. 300 people have registered sick on the same day. A case of bad cantina food poisoning? Nope. Apparently that is how locals protest. Why? Well there is a merger happening, where Tata, a giant local company has decided to bring 2 airlines together into one. Stay healthy folks!

Finally HVS has released a small study the state of the travel market in Amsterdam. Is it good? Well RevPar for 2023 is higher than 2019. So all in all, big players are making more money, OTAs are doing well & major tourist destinations like Amsterdam are overtaking their previous records. Not a bad start for the “end” of the financial crisis?

How Germany Plans to End Homelessness

How? With money of course. 18 billions euros are being given to the states to build social housing. How many homeless people are there though in Germany? 375 thousand+ depending on whose estimate you look. Remember when we discussed Airbnb ratings going down?

Well, I have recently used AirB&B for a 2 night trip with friends in Tagaytay Philippines. The city is located on the verge of a semi-sleeping Volcano and offers delicacies like the traditional “Buko Pie”, a coconut pie and the famous “Bullalo Soup”, a soup with vegetables and beef. After reviewing all the choices available, my choice landed on a high-rise condo facing the volcano. After booking, I received a very, very long automatic message from the host, giving me all the information I needed for my stay.

And for me not to contact him. When I dared to ask for an early check-in, I was answered the following.

Dropping my luggage in the room a few hours before official check-in hours costs money. I’m not talking about using the room. I’m talking about dropping luggage to be able to roam freely. There shouldn’t be a cost for such a simple service. It goes against what Hospitality stands for.

Last time we discussed this subject, I argued it is regrettable that Airbnb hosts turned from kind locals, sharing their passion for their cities and tips for clients to enjoy as much as possible to mighty real estate barons not interested in meeting or communicating with their clients.

I keep believing this decrease in human customer service and the surge of prices are the reason why travellers don’t grade their stays as positively as before.

Additionally, Cebu Pacific renamed its flights to Singapore as "1989" during the concert period, reflecting Swift's birth year and her album title.

Hilton buys a new hotel brand and expands into India

Hilton has made the news twice this week. On one side Hilton is on a fast-track expansion in India, aiming to double its presence with a hotel opening every two to three months. This growth targets diverse markets, from state capitals to emerging cities, due to India's infrastructure boom. Zubin Saxena, Hilton's senior VP and country head for India, emphasizes a mix of luxury and mid-market offerings to cater to India's dominant domestic market. On the other side, Hilton's strategic move to purchase Graduate Hotels for $210 million marks a significant expansion into university-anchored towns across the US and UK. This acquisition not only enriches Hilton's portfolio but also underscores its commitment to the lifestyle space, tapping into the dynamic energy of academic communities. "Sleep tourism" is rising, focusing on deep, restorative sleep in unique settings worldwide. From Madrid's scientific approach to sleep at BLESS Hotel to Lake Como's Grand Hotel Tremezzo offering nature-infused sleep rituals, and London's Zedwell providing serene, soundless cocoons, this trend emphasizes sleep as a luxury experience. The article provides quite a few more examples from different parts of the world. That doesn’t mean this is now a whole entire sub-sector of our industry, yet a new creative way to upsell your way to new clients.

When it comes to the Internet: the faster the better

MSC Cruises has integrated SpaceX's Starlink technology onto 15 out of 22 ships in its fleet, with plans for further expansion. This move comes in response to increasing onboard bandwidth demands from guests' connected devices and applications. Starlink promises faster internet speeds, improved WiFi coverage, reduced latency, and lower operational costs. The first ship upgraded was MSC Magnifica in December 2022, with others like MSC Divina, MSC Grandiosa, and MSC Seaview now equipped. This technology ensures MSC Cruises can meet current and future digital needs. Sister company Explora Journeys has also adopted Starlink on EXPLORA I, with plans for its forthcoming luxury ships, including EXPLORA II, to feature this connectivity from August 2024 onwards.

Germany is on the brink of a bureaucratic revolution, with the Cabinet propelling the Bürokratieentlastungsgesetz, aiming to relieve the economy by €944 million annually. A cornerstone of this legislation for the hotel industry is the anticipated abolition of the registration form requirement for German citizens. Now awaiting the Bundesrat's endorsement, this change heralds a significant shift. Markus Luthe of the Hotel Association Germany welcomes the move but remains cautiously critical, highlighting the continued registration mandate for foreign guests as a thorn in an industry seeking broader deregulation. Big Brother has decided to give us just a little room to breathe.

Why do guests choose “Grande” hotels over others?

Why do grand hotels attract guests? What makes them unique in the eyes of the general public? Everybody has an opinion on this, usually formed right after being asked the question, but we at Le Portee appreciate academic sources, where opinions are usually put aside (at least to some extent). A study interviewed employees of the Grande Hotel do Porto and these are the results. Hotel history, tradition, its facilities and quality of service were the categories mentioned that not only attract guests but also keep employees (some) working there for over 20 years. This study unfortunately does not go to guests themselves and compare their reasons for staying, which would be a great attempt to see whether employees understand their guests well.
